| ||Colonies/Protectorates of totalitarian dictatorships like China are the worst. Although theoretically all are slaves below the emperor/oligarchy, some closer to the power center(s), supposedly more controlled/loyal, are more equal than others. Hence peripheral/buffer states like N Korea, N Vietnam, Pakistan and likely Formosa will get more exploited/sacrificed than the others.
Colonies of democracies like France and USA are not much better, given the distinction between the voting electorates and the non-voting colonials is absolute. Phillippines, Indo-Chine, Syria would be good examples.
Protectorates of above, however, have the consolation of limited self-government, and are allowed to develop as long as they pay tribute and fealty to their master. Hence, Germany and Japan, although stunted in scientific, military, intellectual progress, still manage to prosper.
Colonies/Protectorates of aristocracies like Japan and Britain, whose ruling class is bound by long-held tradition and custom, their oppression can never be too severe.
In the case of British Empire, however, although White-majority Canada and Australia enjoy the full rights of crown colonies, Non-White colonies are exploited by the commercial profit-seeking City of London Corporation(s). One consolation for them is that for small city-states/islands like Singapore, Hong Kong, Bombay, Shanghai, BCI, BVI, as financial hubs, manage to extract vast resources from their hinterland neighbours.
There are variations of the above, like the hybrid aristocracy-democracy of India.
